How would Calvin react to meeting Jason when both his parents were still alive, assuming Willis is not that great of a father. Would he take Jason and run? Would he observe to see how Willis treats his kid? And what would Calvin think of Catherine?

If Calvin just randomly met him one day I don’t think he’d care too much. Having a home is more than some kids in Gotham can boast of, and little Jason didn’t look too worse for wear to truly register for the Talon.

But if for some reason Calvin got attached to Jason and decides to follow him home to make sure he’s well taken care of�� well.

Let’s say Willis isn’t home initially, so for the first few hours Calvin only sees Jason come home to a mother hopped up on drugs (let’s assume it’s the later stage where the addiction was very bad already). And Calvin already feels that uneasy buzz in his gut because— someone like that cannot possibly provide for a small child. And little Jason is cleaning his mom up as best as he can and draping a blanket over her before he goes on the hunt for food in the cupboards. Only to come away with nothing but some canned peaches that he painstakingly pries open. And this is bad enough but— but at least he’s got a home. And food. It’s more than Calvin had with his dad. And there’s always the chance the woman will sober up and realize drugs aren’t as important as her sweet little kid. It’s not his place to intervene—

But then Willis comes home. Just when Calvin was about to leave. And for a moment it’s nothing to worry about, but then Willis starts yelling. And Jason cowers. And the uneasy feeling in Calvin’s gut turns into sickening dread.

And then Willis draws back his fist and—

Taking Jason is so much easier than it should be. The kid is too small for his age, too light. Willis goes down with little more than a solid punch to his throat, and Catherine doesn’t wake up at all. Too deep into her drug induced haze.

And Jason— Jason is scared. Terrified. But Calvin refuses to leave him in a place that’s bound to kill him eventually.

like it's just the way that outside of the BATB/POTO 'love what's ugly and ostracized' narrative itself cocteau was gay and everybody hated his gall about it, howard ashman was gay and had to conceal it and died of aids after finishing his work for disney's batb.... rather than have dark be homophobic and spitting in the face of his inspirational roots (the sole canon detail i can't stand) it's much much much more interesting for me to both read and write not someone who's meant to be a pervert (in humor) and an agape lover (in serious contextualization) only to turn and say 'no homo' to the crowd every single time but rather, instead of all that, someone who, simultaneously taking daisuke into account, is both extremely firm yet simultaneously insecure in the struggle to establish their identity not only in regards to themselves but also around others.

that applies to a lot, but i've been considering it especially in regards to dark's gender and daisuke's attractions. dark in my portrayal (while overall 500% nonbinary) is closer to someone bi-gender rather than agender; the feminine aspect to him isn't just theatrics, it's actively also part of his entirety to him, (compared to daisuke's passivity; the ten thousand canonical princess allusions,) and even if nobody ever recognizes it in a cognizant way, it is always, always there, the same way that erik blurs and obscures gender in leroux's novel (my second enormous inspiration, sugisaki's outright admitted primary) and sakurai occasionally discusses his relationship as both a performer and a person as well (my third enormous inspiration and sugisaki's secondary,) (see 1, 2.) simply put, the tragedy of (my!) dark does not ever derive from his being able to choose and sit comfortably and confidently with this sort of identity (in fact, it's one of the few things he can stubbornly, viciously decide for himself [alongside daisuke] as essentially a non-human, autonomous 'angel',) it's instead the way that his personality is so strong and 'anti-feminine' in the eyes of convention that said aspect of himself often gets disregarded for strictly masculine (and regardless, further self-contradictory and therefore isolating,) expectations.

dark himself alone does not care if others do not understand him; this is meant to be one of his far more admirable and impressive traits. he's staunchly independent: he knows who he is, what he's supposed to be, and he knows that if he actively presented himself more femininely (crossdressing to 'pass' essentially,) then people's behaviors WOULD be very likely to change around him, but he doesn't even do that because it goes against his overwhelming sense of pride. he never contorts, he never twists himself, what matters to him is that he and he alone understands himself and knows what he is, what he isn't. but he is, without proper support or acceptance, still alone. even bearing a strong character, the stifling loneliness and inherent, underlying self-sense of broken/wrongness of the 'other,' (god's luciferean problem child, the black sheep, the black-leather wearing punk,) is still inflicted on him. dark exists solely for himself, he exists solely for daisuke, which is simultaneously wherein the inversion and insecurities lie: if dark is canonically the live metaphor for all the aspects of daisuke's self that he attempts to and yet cannot possibly, conceivably repress, from his loves to his faults to his shames and his criminal sins as a thief, then the likes of daisuke's own personal confusions in regards to himself and his attempts at intimacy/socialization with others is the other, hidden side of dark's absolute self-confidence; it's every fear of perpetual isolation, misunderstanding, and abandonment for things outside of daisuke's own control.

queerness in relation to the self (transgender allegory) queerness in relation to others (non-hetero-romanticism) mental illness (depression, anxiety,) etc, etc, dark's thematic basis may at its most general simply be "a secret that feels wrong and that you feel you can't really tell anyone or else you'll get in trouble/won't be as liked as much" but it feels much better to give due respect to each of these primary roots.

Okay but consider this spin on the Lucina situation with M!Chrobin: Robin has shape shifting powers as a result of being a Fell Dragon, but because of his amnesia he thinks this is completely normal and that everyone is capable of doing it. Meanwhile Chrom is just ignorant enough of magic that he assumes it's a spell Robin developed specifically to help them clear the hurdle of getting an heir.

Like they where talking about having children and the need for an heir to the Halidom, when Chrom brought up surrogacy as an option (clearly not thrilled at the idea) and Robin just shrugged went 'well wouldn't it be easier if one of us just carried the child? I can do it if you're worried about it interfering with your royal duties.' And Chrom was floored assuming that Robin must be some brilliant master mage to already have thought this far ahead and come up with a spell to answer the issue, and he's all like 'don't feel pressurized at all I wouldn't mind!' and Robin who assumes that everyone can just alter their physical sex easier then getting a haircut, just shrugs and goes 'it's no trouble, and it makes more sense for it to be me- I can still advise you while pregnant, you might have a harder time leading armies if you are'.

Everyone else assumes along similar lines to Chrom, but no one is actually comfortable in broaching the subject directly, so this misunderstanding continues for years, until Morgan casually rolls up to the mess tent one morning as a different gender then they where the night before and EVERYONE freaks out about it except for Robin and Lucina who have no idea what everyone is making a fuss about.

(Lucina knows that she and Morgan's ability to shapeshift slightly is because of Robin but thought that everyone knew, Robin still just assumes everyone can do it. Chrom is having a meltdown).

yes!! liu finally runs into jeff when he’s about 26 (16 years later) and it is. a Lot on all ends. liu’s forced to deal with the fact that his older brother has not grown and is nothing like the idol he’s built up over a decade later and jeff has to deal with the fact he actually didn’t kill liu, whoops! i could and probably will write an entire essay on jeff’s thoughts about his origin some other time but tldr he is Not coping well with liu being alive for various reasons. it’s definitely not what either of them were expecting and would take decades to unpack in therapy if either of them actually went to therapy. alas, the best the mansion has is nina, and jeff knows for a fact she does Not follow doctor-patient confidentiality

liu has been on the run for the past decade or so, and jeff isn’t Really sure what the social protocol for encountering your long-lost/presumed dead older-younger brother is, but he’s pretty sure leaving liu now would be Bad, so he obviously brings liu back to the mansion with him when he returns. liu is essentially in shock for the entire experience of 1. actually finding his brother 2. finding out his brother is still 13 and 3. finding out his brother is still 13 because he’s been taken in by an eldritch monster and hidden away in a timeless pocket dimension full of other murderers/supernatural beings. jeff is just lucky he didn’t pass out, because he is Not strong enough to carry a grown ass man into the woods for that long

brian is absolutely flabbergasted that this is the third fucking time someone has shown up to the mansion because of jeff (nina, then jane). sally is initially happy to have another kid her age (sully) but then talks to sully One Time and spends the rest of her day promptly regretting that decision. ben nearly dies a second time when he sees that liu’s been using nothing but a flip phone for years now. jane offers liu her number to page her at any time, having had a Similar Experience of having built this image of Jeff the Killer in her mind for literal years before discovering he’s literally just an ipad kid with knives.

liu becomes the first real constant adult presence in the mansion. jane leaves frequently because of her family and while brian and tim are Almost constant, they sometimes leave to stay with jessica because the mansion can still be Too Much for them. liu doesn’t have anywhere else to go or anything better to do, having completed his life’s purpose, so he’s just forced to Stay
